Agent's Guide to Binaries

While originally designed for text use, Usenet now provides a wealth of information available as binary files. This guide is provided to help you find and access this information.
Important: For any data on Usenet that is copyright protected, make sure that you own the copyright or have obtained permission from the copyright owner before downloading this data. Agent provides tools for accessing this data but you have the responsibility to assure that you have permission to possess and use this data.
General Sites
These sites provide excellent information on how to post and retrieve binary information.
RAR and PAR Files
Large binary files cannot be posted directly to Usenet. The following sites provide information and software to help you retrieve large binary files:
- www.rarlab.com · for downloading WinRAR, which you will need to you can extract information posted as RAR files
- www.quickpar.org.uk · for information and downloading the latest version of QuickPar, which will allow you to use PAR and PAR2 files
- www.freebyte.com/hjsplit · for information and downloading HJ-Split, a program you can use to re-join posted files that were split using HJ-Split
Indexing Sites
These sites allow you to search for content on Usenet. Some are free, some charge a small fee. We've listed some sites here, but to find others use a web search engine, searching for "Usenet index".
Many of these sites provide NZB files, which Agent will use to retrieve files immediately.
